On Friday 10 January 2020, the Dies Natalis of the TU Delft was celebrated. The theme of this edition was ‘Design for Values’.
In the morning the Delft Design for Values Institute hosted the Dies Symposium: Design for Values. After an introduction of the theme illustrated by two cases of successful value sensitive design, the program offered sessions around Value Conflict and Value Dynamics, two of the institute’s research pillars. The sessions comprised inspiring keynote speeches from the two honorary doctors, Batya Friedman and Marco Steinberg, followed by pitches with provocative statements from three TUD researchers and a discussion with the audience.
To revisit the symposium, you can find the symposium’s event page, the recordings of the symposium and the photos (pw: TUD) online. Host of the symposium, Pieter Vermaas, wrote a nice blog post with his reflections.
After the symposium, the Academic Ceremony took place, in which DDfV boardmember Paul Hekkert gave his Dies Lecture titled “The Beauty of Doing the Right Thing“. In an official ceremony, the two Honorary Doctorates were bestowed on Batya Friedman and Marco Steinberg by honorary promotors Ibo van de Poel and Peter Lloyd.
To revisit the ceremony, you can find the recordings, the Dies Lecture and the photos (pw: TUD) online.
We would like to thank all the speakers and attendees for their contribution, and hope you have enjoyed the Dies Natalis and the Design for Values Symposium!
